A co-operative of farmers, a sustainable project with a focus on both human and natural elements.
Created in 1998, Valdibella’s mission is to work in harmony with the land, while assisting the farmers and young people of the region. A truly inspiring story that is a success because of the collective members of the farming community. The farmers grow grapes for wine as well as producing wheat, pasta, olive oil, vegetables and more. Everything is done organically with minimal intervention with a focus on creating a more sustainable and balanced agro-ecosystem. Each crop is interspersed with indigenous plants surrounded by native flora and fauna. At risk youth from the community and beyond are given the opportunity to work, both on the farms and in the production of food and wine products. On top of being socially and environmentally conscious, Valdibella is also Mafia-free – Addio Pizzo (addio = goodbye / pizzo = protection money). This is a movement supporting businesses and those in the community who wish to be free of any involvement by the Mafia.
The wines are focused on local, indigenous varietals such as Catarratto, Zi-bi-bo, Nerello Mascalese and Nero d’Avola. Minimal added sulphur in the production of the wines with no chemicals in the vineyards and cellar. The wines are bright, fresh, elegant ‘natural’ wines that express the terroir of the region approx. 40km south-west of Palermo. And as you can imagine by the produce that is farmed, these are delicious wines with produce from your own local farmers market.
