An historical farm, always with a focus on biodiversity and the preservation of the surrounding area.
Paolo Osti purchased the winery and vineyards in 1986, in part because of his love for the landscape, the land and its fruits. A civil engineer by trade, this was an enormous risk. The property is in the northernmost part of the Chianti Classico district in Greve in Chianti, a short drive south of Florence. The farm is now 60ha, 35ha of which are dedicated to vines with 14ha to olive trees, the rest is forest, growing predominantly Sangiovese, the ‘soul’ of Chianti Classico. Indeed, the first wine produced in 1990 was their Il Tarocco, Chianti Classico. Paolo and his family now farm with a deep respect for the environment, always looking for ways to reduce their impact, and to tread lightly. Controlled grasses in alternate rows naturally enriches the soil with nitrogen. Solar panels have been installed, new lightweight bottles for the wines, electricity needs are provided through renewable sources, a rainwater recovery system has been installed, along with a commitment to employ a diverse, multi-cultural and local workforce. Recently, the family purchased, completely renovated and launched a new agritourism program focused around Villa Ulivello in Chianti. The wines remain focused on the Chianti Classico region, although they do also produce a delightful ‘Super Tuscan’, Lucciolaio. These are wines that are quite contemporary, stressing balance and finesse over raw power. And they are a great accompaniment to food of the region such as pastas, beef dishes and aged cheeses.
