Tenuta di Ghizzano

Terre di Pisa, Tuscany

An historical family with a vision for the future of the region.

The Venerosi Pesciolini family can trace their ancestry back to the Carolingian period, 880-883AD.  Ginevra’s father, who started the winery, was a visionist, understanding the potential for the region long before it became a certified DOC (in 2011). The family have always been at the forefront of the promotion of the region, collaborating with other producers and institutions. ‘Veneroso’ their flagship wine, is the historical and most representative wine of the estate and is a reference point for the winegrowing area.

The estate is 280ha in size, only 18ha given over to vines. There is a 15ha olive grove, 100ha for cereal production, and 150ha given over to forests and woodland.  In 2003, Ginevra set about converting the entire estate to organics, moving toward biodynamic practices in 2006, finally achieving full certification from Demeter in 2018.  After many years of experimentation, in 2017, she added ‘Cocciopesto Amphora’ to the line up of fermentation vessels. (Cocciopesto, as opposed to traditional amphora, have a large oval body, narrow cylindrical neck and are made of ground brick, crushed stone, sand, cement binder and water. They allow for micro-oxygenation to bring out the flavours and aromas of the wine). The wines are a pure expression of the territory – unlike much of Tuscany, this region has influence from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea. These are a different style of Sangiovese, quite fresh with great fruit flavours, with elegance and minerality.  Well worth discovering and enjoying with some classic pasta dishes.
