Nik Weis

Leiven, Mosel

One of the most important reference points in the Mosel region.

In 1947, Nik Weis’ grandfather, started the winery along the Mosel and Saar rivers. Today, Nik, owns 45ha of vineyards stretching over 60km that are cultivated in a traditional manner. The winery joined the renowned VDP (Association of German Quality Wine Estates), that self-imposes strict criteria, including dramatically lowered yields, to guarantee wines of the highest quality. The cool continental climate and steep slate slopes produce some of the world’s freshest and most age-worthy Rieslings. Indeed, part of Nik’s vineyard holdings include 5 of the prestigious individual crus, which are classified as Wines from great Sites (VDP Grösse Lage). The wines are fermented exclusively with indigenous yeasts. Additionally, Nik’s grandfather not only founded the winery in 1947, but also established one of the first privately owned nurseries, one of the focuses being the genetics of very old Riesling vines in the Mosel. The nursery is the source for winemakers around the world, including here in Ontario, for new Riesling grapevines. These are incredibly structured wines, particularly well suited with charcuterie, cheese and ‘Wiener Schnitzel’.
