Lua Cheia-Saven

Vinho Verde & Douro

Lua Cheia-Saven is a wine producer from some of the most important regions in Portugal.

Collectively, Lua Cheia-Saven, which was formed in 2009, owns 40ha of vineyards in Vinho Verde and the Douro regions all farmed organically. Additionally, they have access to a further 200ha of vineyards in partnerships with local growers in these regions as well as Dão and Alentejo. Portuguese law does not allow for grapes to be transported across wine growing regions, so the company also maintains 5 different wineries, with a dedicated team in each winery, overseen by winemaker and part-owner Francisco Baptista.  Protecting the old field blends and vineyards is of particular importance to the winery.  These ancient, historic sites are being lost as many winegrowers are choosing to replant them with mono varietals.

The wineries are quite modern, in contrast to these old vineyards, designed with plenty of space for barrel rooms, stainless steel tanks and some experimental vessels such as concrete eggs. Sur lie aging with battonage is the name of the game regardless of the level of wine being produced. Stainless steel vs. oak decisions are also made depending on the quality/price of the wines.  The Douro valley is famously, incredibly steep, necessitating everything to be done by hand.  And yet, the value/price/quality ratio is incredible.  Very affordable wines to enjoy a glass in any casual setting you choose.
