In 2006, Erica and her husband Kim, purchased an untamed block of land on top of the hills overlooking Marlborough’s Awatere Valley within a stones throw of the Tasman Sea. The organic winemaking philosophy was anchored when Erica was forced to carefully and progressively examine the chemical nature in her immediate environment. As they planted out their vineyard sites the decision to tackle organics was an obvious one. Over time, the vineyards were coaxed into production with organic and biodynamic practices and not a small amount of sheer bloodied mindedness. This became known as Erica’s ‘Love Block’ – in part for the spectacular view, and in part for the nurturing required to farm it.
Sustainability is a process that is with Erica for ever. It, of course, makes good environmental sense, but it also makes great business sense. It isn’t a one-off project that can be ticked off. It is ongoing and requires continual improvements. When you hold a glass of Loveblock in your hands, relish the unbridled flavours and aromas. For Erica, it is exciting to produce wines of quality uninterrupted by pressures of conformity. These are wines full of character, to be consumed with friends, and the love of a beautiful healthy meal.
