Le Boncie

Castelnuovo Berardenga, Tuscany

Giovanna Morganti is a living legend, pure and simple.

Le Boncie is tiny, <5ha, located in the small hamlet of San Felice, just north of Castelnuovo Berardenga in Chianti Classico, although Giovanna opted out of the DOC in 2011. Giovanna is an outspoken advocate of natural farming and non-interventionist winemaking. The vineyards are planted to a very high density of 7,000 vines per ha, dedicated primarily to Sangiovese and vineyard work is conducted according to the general principles of the biodynamic movement. The vines are pruned in a unique fashion leaving 3 spurs that helps protect them in this arid environment. Harvesting is by hand, fermentation occurs in traditional open-topped wooden tanks, with a long and tranquil élévage. Aging is in barrels and the wine is left in the bottles for at least six months prior to release.  Restaurants worldwide glamour for her wines and it is like winning the lottery if you get some. We get a tiny allocation each year and would recommend cellaring ‘Le Trame’ for another 5 years before bringing it out for one of those truly special occasions.
