Kistler is a single clone chardonnay house, first and foremost!
Kistler is entirely dedicated to the ideal of wines of site with one heritage Californian selection planted across 15 vineyards resulting in 11 vineyard designated chardonnays + 2 multi-vineyard wines. Similarly, their pinot noir production originates from 2 heritage Burgundian selections creating 4 site specific wines. The distinct soils found in the vineyards range from marine loam, to red volcanics, to marine sediment and sand-driven Gold Ridge soil. The 'sites' produce chardonnays of precision, great depth, concentration and elegance.
A gentle touch defines the approach at Kistler. The fermentations are guided with as little intervention as possible. They watch, take notes and guide some more. Everything must be perfectly in balance for this is highly thoughtful, meticulously considered, winemaking. They are, undeniably, one of the world’s great chardonnay and pinot noir producers.
