Janare

Benevento, Campania

Janare aims to promote indigenous varietals while protecting the interests of the farmers, while celebrating the historical region and its' legends.

This is a collection of 1,000 growers who farm collectively 1,500ha between them. This is a complex area of varied soils from alluvial terraces to volcanic deposits. And this is a celebration of legends. Founded in 1960, by 33 farmers who wanted to control their destiny, the co-operative is the most important in the region, is a symbol of technological progress, environmental sustainability and renewable energy. The genesis for this unique valley, situated between the Matese Mountains and Mount Taburno at an elevation of 350m can be traced back approx. 30,000 years to the explosion of a super volcano, Campi Fleigrei, significantly larger and older than Mount Vesuvius.

The emphasis is on Falanghina for white wines and Aglianico for red wines.  There are several different ranges of the wines as winemaker and viticulturist Marco Giulioli continues to explore the region, isolating different vineyards for their soil type. His most recent wines, Anima Lavica, are produced exclusively from the volcanic soils deposited by the Campi Fleigrei explosion. The minerality and saline quality is quite outstanding and distinct. The Janare labels celebrate the local legends of the Samnite people. The main range, Alfabeto, celebrates the ancient Samnite alphabet, and are produced by blending the different terroirs of the valley, creating wines of harmony and character that are such great accompaniments to everyday life.
