Bisci

Matelica, Le Marche

Bisci is a ‘heavyweight’ in the small Verdicchio di Matelica denomination.

Bisci, established in 1972, and now run by 2nd generation Mauro Bisci, is in the small Verdicchio di Matelica DOC.  It is important to understand the differences between Matelica and its big brother Castelli di Jesi. There are just 12 producers in the Matelica region covering a total of 300ha vs. 2,000+ha in Jesi. Matelica is in a valley which is parallel to the coast and not influenced by the sea breeze. The climate is continental with hot summers and cold winters with a particularly broad diurnal temperature range. And the soil is clayey-calcareous, rich in micro-elements from an ancient marine basin. This greatly affects the structure and age ability of the white wines.

The estate is 20ha of certified organic vineyards at an elevation of 300-350m. All the vineyard operations are carried out in meticulous detail, a hallmark of Bisci. Fermentations and maturations for Bisci white wines take place in glazed concrete tanks. This allows for great structure and minerality in the wines that are very faithful to the Matelica terroir. As you can imagine, these are fabulous wines with food, especially oysters and other shellfish dishes.
