Located in the Provence-Alpes-Co?tes d’Azur region, Cha?teau Val Joanis is built on the site of an ancient Roman Villa, some of whose stones decorate the estate’s elaborate and renowned gardens today. The property fell into ruins during the 19th century, and it wasn’t until 1977 that it saw its renaissance. It was purchased by Jean-Louis Chancel, and between 1979 and 1999, he planted 186 hectares of vines and commissioned the creation of an on-site, modern winery. While this transition was underway, Jean-Louis’ wife, Ce?cile, worked to create the garden masterpiece that encapsulates the estate today. The gardens were finished in their present form in 1990, built on three terraces cut into a hillside overlooking the vineyards. In 2013, the Rosen family purchased the estate, and their investments in restoration and modernization of the vineyards, gardens and cellar have been substantial, reflected in the outstanding quality-price of the wines.
The estate totals 460 ha, including 120 ha of vineyards between 250 & 450 metres elevation. Multiple small vineyard blocks, with extremely varied soil composition, allow for complex, characterful wines.
