McMANIS FAMILY VINEYARDS, Ripon, San Joaquin Valley

The McManis family has been farming California’s northern interior since 1938. However, it wasn’t until 1990 when 4th generation farmers, Ron & Jamie, created the now eponymous McManis Family Vineyards Company. Prior to this, the family had been growing grapes for many other wineries in the area. Today, the winery has grown, with the majority of the vineyards located in Clarksburg, Lodi, Jahant-Lodi, River Junction (they are the only vineyard owner in this AVA), Mokelumne River and Clements Hills AVAs. Today, 5th generation, daughter, Tanya, and son, Justin have joined their parents in the business along with son-in-law, Dirk who looks after the vineyards.

The wines, winery and vineyards are Certified Sustainable under the Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing, among the most stringent certification bodies in the state and indeed the world. This is a real source of pride for the family and a commitment they do not take lightly.

LODI RULES promotes wine grape grower adoption of over 100 sustainability practices, which are called “Standards”. The Standards were collaboratively developed by a team of Lodi wine grape growers, viticultural professionals, and scientists, and were first accredited by Protected Harvest in 2005.

The LODI RULES Standards are the backbone of the program, and are organized into six areas:

  • Business Management,
  • Human Resources Management,
  • Ecosystem Management,
  • Soil Management,
  • Water Management, and
  • Pest Management.

Each Standard meets three criteria: first, it is measurable; second, it addresses at least one of the three aspects of sustainability (environmental health, social equity, and economic viability); and third, it is economically feasible to implement.

The LODI RULES Standards are the most thoroughly and rigorously vetted set of sustainability practices in California’s viticulture industry. All Standards have been peer reviewed by world renowned scientists, members of the academic community, and environmental organizations.

In 2016, McManis were awarded the Green Medal for Leadership by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. This award is given to a vineyard or winery that excels in the 3 ‘Es’ of sustainability – Environmentally sound, socially Equitable, and Economically viable practices.

In 2022, McManis were recognised a 2nd time and were awarded the Green Medal for Community. This award is given to the vineyard or winery that is a Good Neighbour and Employer using the most innovative practices that enhance the relations with the employees, neighbours and/or communities.

The McManis varietal wines are 100% Estate Grown, Appellation-Specific, Certified Sustainable, and Vegan Friendly. And of course – family owned and operated. Authentic wines, outstanding value.
