BODEGAS REMIREZ de GANUZA, Samaniego, Rioja Alavesa

Established in 1989, this relatively young winery has carved out a place for itself among the ‘New Rioja’ class of bodegas. Fernando Remírez de Ganuza is one of the top vineyard experts in Rioja, combining a practical approach with an in-depth knowledge of the region’s vineyards. Fernando’s insistent emphasis on the importance of vine age and stock pedigree has helped to reinforce his international reputation for producing premium wines.

His painstaking attention to detail and quality has catapulted him to the forefront of Rioja’s top, modern-style labels.  He credits his success to what he calls the decisive factors in making a great wine:  the habitat, the microclimate, the positioning of the plots, low yielding plants and the age of the vineyard.  Fernando is so particular with his wines that even at the distribution stage each parcel is covered with a thermal blanket to protect the wine from possible temperature fluctuations.

Remírez de Genuza maintains nearly 60 hectares of vineyards in various plots in four parts of Rioja Alavesa:  Samaniego, Leza, Elciego and Laguardia.  They work with fifty hectares of Tempranillo (90%) and Graciano (10%) situated in the remarkable enclaves of the Alavés vineyards.  Their vine stocks are an average of 60 years old, with the youngest being 30 years old and the oldest 96.  The portfolio includes the Erre Punto Blanco, Fincas de Ganuza and the core Reserva and flagship wine, Trasnocho.
