LANDMARK VINEYARDS, Kenwood, Sonoma

Tucked away at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains in the Sonoma Valley, Landmark Vineyards epitomizes the rustic grace and beauty of Sonoma County. Landmark has been producing premium, handcrafted wines since 1974.

The winery’s history is rooted in agriculture — founder Damaris Deere Ford is the great-great-granddaughter of John Deere, inventor of the first steel plow. Damaris turned her focus to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the early ‘90s — 1991 was the first vintage of ‘Overlook’ Chardonnay, which continues to be their flagship wine.  In 1993 Landmark deepened their commitment to world-class Chardonnay production by hiring celebrated enologist Helen Turley, which led to Landmark’s signature style: whole-cluster pressed grapes, native yeast fermentation and barrel aging in French oak.

Today, winemaker Greg Stach uses these same techniques, guided by a ‘less is more’ philosophy. Believing that great wines start in the vineyard, he intervenes only to ensure consistency and quality. He relies on the fruit’s natural flavour intensity and its distinct vineyard characteristics to craft interesting, elegant wines. To achieve their desired style, Landmark sources fruit from prestigious cool-climate vineyard sites across California, including Sonoma, Monterey and Santa Barbara counties.

Landmark ‘Overlook’ Chardonnay has been included in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list 6 times. In 2014, the winery released their first vintage of ‘Overlook’ Pinot Noir, bound to achieve similar greatness based on the same elegant, complex style as the Chardonnay.

Today, Landmark is owned by Lynda and Stewart Resnick, who also own Justin Vineyards, another of our great California wineries.
