JUSTIN VINEYARDS & WINERY, Paso Robles
Former investment bankers, Justin & Deborah Baldwin founded Justin Vineyards & Winery in 1981, purchasing 160 acres of land in the beautiful hills 15 miles west of Paso Robles.
Less than ten miles from the Pacific Ocean with elevations ranging from 1100 to 1800 feet; 72 organically-farmed acres (mostly dry-farmed), are planted primarily to Bordeaux varietals. One of the defining characteristics of the location is the dramatic variance between daytime & night-time temperatures at Justin — proximity to the ocean and altitude combine to cause a diurnal change of up to 50º F. Also notable is that the region's growing season extends up to a month longer on the ‘west side’ of Paso compared to California’s North Coast. Again, this contributes to the impressive complexity of these wines.
Isosceles is THE Benchmark wine of the region – Justin’s homage to the Médoc; and after 15 years, Justin Cabernet (100% pure) remains one of our most popular wines. Justin was a pioneer, inspiring distinguished estates Tablas Creek, L’Aventure, Daou & others to follow. In 2011, Stewart & Lynda Resnick (POM Wonderful, FIJI Water) acquired the winery, and have made significant investment in additional vineyard resources. Fred Holloway (Lokoya, Cardinale, Verité) has been winemaker since 2003, and in 2012 Scott Shirley (formerly Opus One, Hess Collection) became winemaker, as Fred took overall responsibility for vineyards and winemaking.
These are like Bordeaux, displaying poise and balance, but with an utterly Californian flamboyance.
