McManis 2016 Petit Verdot

New to the McManis collection, this is a highly appealing varietal Petit Verdot. One of the classic Bordeaux varietals, Petit Verdot is aromatic and deeply-coloured, with savoury acidity. Single-varietal bottlings are a somewhat rare treat.

McManis' 2016  Petit Verdot is deep eggplant in colorr. Aromatically, the wine is full of blackberry and blueberry with additional notes of mocha and a faint smokiness, both contributed from oak aging. The wine is dense and full of dark berry fruit flavours that mirror its aromas, with a creamy, supple mouth-feel. Flavours of fresh berries and mocha linger in the finish.

McManis 2016 North Forty

Ok, this isn't quite 'new' as we've had a little of previous vintages... However, it is the first time we've had enough of this 'Reserve' quality wine to offer broadly. This is a really cool wine, and a bit of departure for McManis as it is a blend of red grapes rather than a varietally-labelled bottling.

The 2016 North Forty Red is creamy and dense with a deep, highly pigmented purple hue. Aromatically, the wine displays substantial dark berry fruit accompanied by mocha and a modicum of vanilla. Similar to the 2014, the 2016 has flavours of black raspberry and blackberry interlaced with dark chocolate, a contribution from the wine's time in French oak. The blend includes 33% Petite Sirah, 29% Petit Verdot, 15% Tannat, 14% Zinfandel and 9% Barbera. It's stunning and impressive effort.

About McManis Family Vineyards

The McManis family has been farming in California’s Central Valley since 1938. When we started working with Jamie & Ron McManis in early 2002, they had just released the first vintage of their eponymous wine — fewer than 10,000 cases of 2000 vintage, from estate and purchased fruit. We were knocked out by the unparalleled value and the appealing style of their wines. Since then, McManis has taken on a life of its own, growing to more than 3600 acres of estate vineyards (in the River Junction, Borden Ranch, Clements Hill, Jahant and Clarksburg appellations) and over 400,000 cases annual production. Their vineyards are Certified Sustainable under the strict ‘Lodi Rules’ program, ensuring the long term health of the vineyards and vineyard workers.

Until the late 1990s McManis sold all their grapes to other wineries. They continue to supply grapes and finished or bulk wines to a number of high profile wineries. This winery-to-winery business remains the largest part of the picture for McManis. However, what’s most satisfying for Ron and Jamie McManis is putting their own name on the labels, and they set a very high standard for the quality and value of these wines. Winemaker Mike Robustelli has been with McManis since the 1999 harvest. Tanya and Justin McManis, and Tanya's husband Dirk, have joined their parents in the winery and vineyard business, becoming the fifth generation to farm this land. As the San Francisco Chronicle says, “McManis makes honest, affordable table wines that outperform the competition.”
