Lauded 2013 Vintage

It’s an embarrassment of riches - the 2013s from PlumpJack, Cade and Odette are arriving.
Bad news - the ongoing drought in California reduced crop levels and we have smaller than normal allocations
Good news - the ongoing drought in California contributed to dramatic, full-throttle, impressively high-quality wines.
This is a stunning collection of wines from the team at the PlumpJack group of wineries.  Winemakers Aaron Miller (PlumpJack), Danielle Cyrot (Cade) and Jeff Owens (Odette) at having a blast, and it shows.

PlumpJack 2013 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

96 points - Robert M. Parker

“The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Oakville is a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot aged in 80% new French oak. A beautiful, saturated purple color offers up blackberry, crème de cassis, licorice, charcoal and camphor. Full-bodied, yet still youthful and tight, it is bursting with terrific purity, texture and length. This big, classic Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon will hit its prime in 10-15 years, and last 30 or more years, based on how older vintages from this sector have aged. It's a beauty.”

PlumpJack 2015 Chardonnay Reserve

Vineyards in St. Helena and Carneros contribute to the complexity and character of this full-bodied, beautifully balanced Chardonnay. The cooler Carneros site imparts fresh green apple, Bosc pear, and lemon zest on the nose, while the warmer St. Helena site lends some tropical and melon notes. Only 1/3 of the wine is fermented & aged in oak, adding subtle layers to the nose & palate with traces of toasted almonds, vanilla, and spice. By foregoing malolactic fermentation , the wine retains its' bright, lively malic acid, which helps to accentuate the fruit on the palate, and gives this wine its balance and drive. This is an impressive Chardonnay, with an appealing fruit-forward style.

Odette 2013 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

95+ points - Robert M. Parker

“The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate exhibits graphite, blackberry and cassis, chocolate and a touch of mineral in a full-bodied, layered and impressively pure style. It’s a big wine for Stags Leap (15.4% alcohol), but gorgeously pure, with everything well-knit into a sensational equilibrium. This is only a baby, but promises to hit its peak in 7-10 years and last 25-30."

Cade 2013 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mountain

97 points - Robert M. Parker

"Lastly, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Howell Mountain (100% Cabernet Sauvignon with a screw cap) tips the scales at 15.9% alcohol. This is another stunningly proportioned, majestic mountain Cabernet, with mulberry, blueberry, blackberry and floral notes that is concentrated, full-bodied and multilayered. This skyscraper-like Cabernet Sauvignon is majestic, super-pure and a stunner. The alcohol is totally hidden, so unless you’re paranoid, simply see the number, and have an immediate loss of reason, this is a beautiful, full-throttle, full-bodied wine that is impeccably well-balanced, with great purity, depth and concentration. Drink it over the next 15-20 years."

About PlumpJack, Cade & Odette

Established in 1995 by Gordon Getty and Gavin Newsom, PlumpJack Winery quickly became a Napa icon. This 42-acre estate on the Oakville Crossroad is in the heart of California’s most prestigious Cabernet appellation, considered some of the finest vineyard land in California. The facility where PlumpJack now makes wine was the original home of Villa Mt. Eden Winery, founded in 1881.  The great wines produced at this estate in the '70s are legendary Napa Cabernets.  Neighbours include Groth, Screaming Eagle, Silver Oak, Opus One, Rudd and Harlan. Aaron Miller is winemaker, taking over from Tony Biagi with the 2012 vintage. Aaron was previously at Groth, another of the iconic Napa wineries in our portfolio, and a mere stone's throw from PlumpJack, along the Oakville Crossroad.

Ten years on, PlumpJack G.M. John Conover joined Newsom and Getty in founding Cade Winery. The winery and vineyards were established on a virgin site at 1800 feet elevation on Howell Mountain. Of the estate’s 54 acres, 21 are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot vineyard. The vineyards have been farmed organically from the start and the winery itself was Napa’s first LEED Gold Certified estate winery — even the insulation is made from recycled blue jeans. Cade’s first vintage was 2006 and fruit for the Napa and Howell Mountain Cabs was sourced from select, prestigious vineyards. In 2007, Cade released their first vintage of ‘Estate’ Cabernet. Winemaker is Danielle Cyrot. With experience in Alsace and Australia, she joined Cade from St. Clement winery. The goal here is structured, but accessible Howell Mountain Cab — which has a reputation for being iron-hard when young.

In 2014, the team introduced Odette Winery on the Silverado Trail in Napa’s Stags Leap District.  The former Stelzner (est. 1965) vineyards, winery and caves have been completely refurbished. 45 acres of Cabernet and Merlot are organically farmed. Winemaker Jeff Owens, worked with Tony Biagi at PlumpJack since 2006, and almost had a heart attack when his first vintage of Odette Reserve Cab was awarded a 100 point score by Parker. The wines are intended to show classic Stags Leap velvet texture and bold yet elegant character.
