'TIS THE SEASON

It’s become a tradition to send our clients an offer of Benchmark Cabernets this time of year. These wines make terrific gifts, but we also deserve to treat ourselves, too. We have an exceptional selection of ‘Artisanal, Benchmark, Characterful & Distinctive’ California Cabernets from family-owned estates, most of which are not available in LCBO stores.  Some are even packed in 6-bottle cases.

Murphy-Goode

2010 Cabernet Sauvignon
Retail: $22.95 / btl (12 x 750 ml/cs)

Dave Ready (son of one of the founding partners of Murphy-Goode) is the talented winemaker here, a nice connection for Jackson Family Wines to maintain since their purchase of the winery a few years ago. The vineyard resources owned by Jackson are formidable, and this wine reflects the advantage of all that talent and excellent vineyards.  This is an unbeatable bottle of Cab at the price.

Whitehall Lane

2011 'Tre Leone' Cabernet Blend, Napa
Retail: $36.95 / btl (12 x 750 ml/cs)

The Leonardini family has owned WHL since 1993, which now comprises 6 vineyards (about 160 acres) among some of Napa's valley floor sub-appellations. Tre Leone is a delicious blend from a winery that Wine Spectator included in their 'Top 50 Napa Cab Producers' for consistent quality vintage after vintage. The wine is equal parts Cabernet / Merlot / Syrah. The 3 lions (Tre Leone) represent Tom Leonardini Sr, Jr, and Tom the 3rd.

Justin

2010 Isosceles, Paso Robles
Retail: $52.95 / btl (12 x 375 ml/cs)

These half bottles are perfect for those lonely nights…  And besides, they are all we have left – no more Isosceles before Spring, folks, so console yourselves with a case of half bottles in the meantime. The climate in the 'West Side' mountains of Paso Robles is the defining influence on these outstanding wines - hot days and cold nights - meaning ripe, dark fruit with vigorous balancing acidity. The wines are full-bodied, but never heavy.  Isosceles is Cabernet/Merlot/Cab Franc (like Médoc), all with an in-your-face California attitude.

PlumpJack

2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Oakville, Napa
Retail $399.95 / btl (6 x 750 ml/cs)
- 5 LEFT

In 1995, PlumpJack rocketed to premier status among Napa Cab producers - we've represented them since '97. Winemaking talent led by the amazing Nils Venge, and a vineyard beside Groth & across from Screaming Eagle contribute to the string of outstanding wines.  The same crew is responsible for Cade, Adaptation, and soon – Odette.  Adaptation is made from younger vines, and is assembled from PlumpJack, Cade & Odette vineyard sources.

PlumpJack Accolades

'The (PlumpJack) 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, which comes from the same McWilliams Oakville vineyard that made Villa Mt. Eden famous, ratchets up everything.  A nearly perfect, compelling Cabernet Sauvignon, it boasts an inky blue/purple color as well as a gorgeous perfume of spring flowers, blueberry liqueur and creme de cassis, a skyscraper-like texture without heaviness, full body and beautiful purity as well as depth. This stunning Cabernet Sauvignon is a compelling example of Plumpjack. This enviable estate on the Oakville Corridor, sandwiched between Rudd Estate and Screaming Eagle, and overlooked by Dalla Valle and a handful of other blue bloods is the former Villa Mt. Eden estate made famous by Nils Venge in the 1970s. The great wines of Villa Mt. Eden are well represented by what Plumpjack has accomplished since they took over this estate. There are two cuvees, the basic Cabernet Sauvignon and a Reserve offering.' – Robert Parker, 99 points

Retail:  $46.95 / btl    (12 x 750 ml/cs)

Cade

2010 'Estate' Cabernet, Howell Mountain, Napa
Retail: $208.95 / btl  (6 x 750 ml/cs)  - 3 LEFT

Cade is PlumpJack's second winery, founded in 2005 on Howell Mountain.  The wines are a little more structured than the lush PlumpJack style dictated by the Oakville vineyard.  The winery itself is LEED Gold certified, and the estate vineyard is farmed organically.  It’s a gorgeous winery in a stunning mountainside setting – make a point of visiting if you visit Napa.

Cade Accolades

95-97 Points - Antonio Galloni - 'This is a very strong set of wines from Cade, the Howell Mountain sister property of Plumpjack. Winemaker Tony Biagi and his team have crafted a gorgeous set of 2009s and 2010s. The wines are very different stylistically, yet quite similar in terms of quality. The ‘Howell Mountain’ bottling includes purchased fruit and a dollop of Merlot. The ‘Estate’ bottling is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, naturally from the estate’s own vineyards, and tends to be vinified with 100% natural malos. Both wines are striking.'

90+ Points - Robert Parker - 'The superb 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate exhibits wonderful boysenberry, blueberry, raspberry, crushed rock and floral aromas. This blockbuster yet extremely elegant wine is made from 100% estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. Enjoy this beauty now or cellar it for another two decades.'

Philip Togni

2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Spring Mtn, Napa
Retail: $157.95 / btl (12 x 750 ml/cs) - 2 LEFT

Robert Parker - 92+ Points

2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, Spring Mtn., Napa
Retail: $137.95 / btl (12 x 750 ml/cs)

Bonus - free Riedel Decanter with each case!

Undoubtedly, the jewel in the crown of our Napa Cabernet producers, Philip Togni has been making wine in California since 1959 (and before that in Chile & Bordeaux). Everything is strictly estate grown, hand made by the family - Philip & Birgita with daughter Lisa moving into the lead role of winemaker.

Philip Togni Accolades

'Philip Togni hardly needs an introduction to lovers of fine Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Since his epic 1969 Cabernet Sauvignon at Chappellet, Togni has crafted a series of impeccable, breathtaking wines. It is amazing to consider that Togni’s wines remain so reasonably priced when an endless number of new wineries with no track record seem to pop up every day with first releases well over $100 a bottle. The winery is very much a family affair… On an earlier visit this year I tasted the 1987, a wine that remains dazzling for its purity. From time to time Togni releases a small amount of wines from their library, usually at the 10th anniversary of an important vintage. The Cabernet Sauvignon (here referred to as the Main Label) generally includes a dollop of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The estate’s Tanbark Hill is a second selection made from the barrels that don’t go into the Cabernet Sauvignon. All of the wines see approximately 40% new oak from four different tonneliers.' - Antonio Galloni

Groth

2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, Napa
Retail: $88.95 / btl (6 x 750 ml/cs)

Groth has been producing stunning wine since '82. This benchmark winery was the first to be awarded 100 points by Parker (1985 Reserve Cab). Nils Venge was winemaker through '93, and Michael Weis has been winemaker since. Delicious upon release, these Cabs really shine after 5-10 years in the cellar. Outstanding, ageworthy, graceful, collectible.

Schramsberg

Mirabelle Brut Rosé, California
Retail:  $38.95 / btl    (12 x 750 ml/case)

Get a free Schramsberg stopper with each case!

'...Revived in 1965 by Jack and Jamie Davies, [Schramsberg] has adopted the slogan “America’s House of Sparkling Wine.” The Mirabelle displays a pretty salmon hue and the palate is substantial and bone-dry, with bright berries and crisp citrus joined by bracing minerality.”
